Pungent soft stone fruits met polished leather boots, while nearby someone smoked a frozen raspberry and blueberry shisha-flavoured hookah. On the palate, we stayed with the fruit theme, finding soft and chewy candies with real fruit juice next to a spiced rum gimlet cocktail made with spiced rum, lime and pineapple juice as well as simple syrup. After reduction the scent turned sweeter, with toffee, maple syrup and maraschino cherries before deeper aromas of figs, nuts and prosciutto ham emerged. The taste was a caffè corretto, an espresso with a shot of grappa, and very dark coffee chocolate. Following 10 years in an ex-Bourbon hogshead, we transferred this whisky into a second fill port barrique.
